Wit.ai Privacy Policy

Meta provides an online software platform under the Wit.ai brand (or any successor version of such brand) that enables developers to build and deploy natural language interfaces for products, devices and software applications (the "Platform") and obtain services related to or in connection with our Platform (collectively, the "Services"). We describe our Platform and Services in more detail in our Wit.ai Terms of Service.
This Privacy Policy describes the information we process to support the Services and, in particular, explains how we treat information from or about visitors to our website (at https://wit.ai/) and developers who use our Services (collectively, "users"). Please note that developers may integrate our software into their products, devices and applications and provide us with information from or about their end users. This may include voice, speech and text data and other associated data. To the extent that we process such information, we do so on behalf of the developers for the purpose of providing our Services to them and in accordance with our Terms of Service. The processing of such information is not governed by this Privacy Policy. If you are an end user of a product, device or application that is integrated with our software, please check with the relevant developer about the policies they have in place regarding the processing of your information.
  1. What kind of information do we collect?
  2. Depending on your use of the Services, we process different kinds of information from or about you. Here's how:
    • Information You Give Us. We collect the information you give us when using the Services. For example:
      • When you log into our Services using your Meta account, we may collect relevant information necessary to authenticate your account such as your email address and profile picture.
      • We collect content you create using our Platform in connection with your Wit App (including "utterances", "intents", and "entities"). For more information about the content you can create, please see the Platform documentation. We also collect certain information about the content you provide to us, such as the date and time you created the content.
      • When you post, share or communicate with us or other users on our Services, we receive and store these communications and any content or information associated with them, such as content you create on forums or blogs on the Services and the date and time when a post was created.
      • We collect voice samples, to the extent you elect to create a customized voice in connection with our text-to-speech service.
      • When you use our demo feature on our website, we collect voice, speech and text data to provide the demo feature to you and to improve our Services and automatic speech recognition models. This includes words, phrases, commands and other data associated with these categories.
    • Information Automatically Collected About You When You Use The Services. We also collect information automatically when you visit our website or use the Services. Depending on how you access and use our Services, we collect information such as:
      • Information about your interactions using our website and Services, including information about the pages, content and features you interact with. For example, we receive information about the pages you view, how frequently you access the Services, the features you interact with, crash reporting data, and other statistics related to your use of the Services.
      • Information collected in or through cookies, local storage, pixels and similar technologies (additional information about these technologies is available here ).
      • Information about how you access the Services, including information about the type of device you're using, specific details regarding any mobile device (such as device type, manufacturer, geographical location), its configuration (such as your operating system), your browser, the Internet protocol ("IP") address and how your device is performing.
      • Certain identifiers that are unique to you. These identifiers include device and other identifiers, such as identifiers from the devices you use.
      • Location-related information, which can be derived from information such as your device's IP address. If you're using a mobile device, the Services may collect information about the device's precise location, which is derived from sources such as the device's GPS signal and information about nearby Wi-Fi networks and mobile base stations.
      • Technical system information such as crash logs which may contain your Wit ID, the device ID, the IP address, the local computer file path, the feature quality, the amount of time it takes to load a feature and whether you use a certain feature.
  3. How do we use information?
  4. We use the information as set out below and to provide our Services to you. Here's how:
    • To provide and personalize our Services. We use the information we collect to operate, maintain, and provide you with our Services. For example, we use this information to:
      • Create and authenticate your account;
      • Provide you with a natural language interface for your products, devices and applications;
      • Enable certain features, such as processing your audio, speech and text data to provide the demo feature to you;
      • Communicate with you about our Services and notify you of updates;
      • Provide technical support;
      • Analyze and monitor usage and trends; and
      • Customize your experience on our Services based on your activities. This allows us to make your experience unique and relevant to you, for example, by showing or providing you with content that is most relevant to you.
    • To improve and develop your experience and our Services. We also use the information we collect to understand and improve our Services and to develop the Platform. For example, we may analyze the content you create using our Platform in connection with your Wit App to improve, train and develop our automated speech recognition models.
    • To market to you. We use the information we collect to send you promotional messages and content about our Services. We also use this information to measure how users respond to our marketing efforts. If you would like to opt out of receiving marketing emails, you can click on the "unsubscribe" button in the emails we send you or contact us using the details provided below.
    • To promote safety, integrity and security. We use the information we collect to verify accounts and activity, maintain the integrity of the Services and promote safety and security on and off the Services. For example, we use information collected to investigate suspicious activity or breaches or violations of our terms or policies and protect our or others' rights or property.
    • As required by applicable law, legal process or regulation. We may process your personal information if applicable law, legal process or regulation requires us to do so.
    If you choose not to provide certain information to us, the quality of your experience using our Services may be affected.
  5. How is information shared?
  6. To provide and support the Services, information we have about you is shared in certain circumstances. Here is who can see information about you when you and others use our Services.
    • People and accounts you share and communicate with when using the Services. When you share, interact and communicate using our Services, you choose the audience for what you share. For example, if you choose to make your Wit App open, then other users will be able to access and view the content you create in connection with your Wit App. If you post information to public areas of the Services, such as a forum or blog, then it will also be visible to others.
    • Sharing Within Related Companies. We share infrastructure, systems and technology with related companies, including the Meta Companies . See Section 4 below for more information.
    • Service providers. We share the information we collect with vendors, service providers, researchers and other partners, who work under our direction to support the Services (such as analyzing the way in which people use the Services, providing customer service or sending electronic communications for us).
    • Other parties in connection with certain business transactions. In the event that the ownership of Meta (or any portion of our assets) changes as a result of a merger or acquisition or in the event of bankruptcy, information from or about you or your device will be transferred to another company.
    • Law enforcement or legal requests. We share information with law enforcement agencies or in response to legal requests consistent with this policy and applicable law.
    • Permission. We will only share your information for other purposes, including with third parties for their own use, with your permission.
  7. How do the Meta Companies work together?
  8. We share infrastructure, systems and technology with the Meta Companies to provide an innovative, relevant, consistent and safe experience across all Meta Company Products you use. We also process information about you across the Meta Companies for these purposes, as permitted by applicable law and in accordance with their terms and policies. We also work to understand how people use and interact with Meta Company Products, such as by understanding the number of unique users on different Meta Company Products.
  9. How can I manage or delete information about me?
  10. Under applicable data protection laws, you may have certain rights in respect of your data such as the right to access, rectify or delete your data. For example, under European or UK law you have the right to: (i) access, rectify, port and delete your data; (ii) restrict certain processing of your data; (iii) object to our processing of your data for direct marketing purposes or where we are pursuing our legitimate interests or those of a third party. Under Brazilian law, you have the right to: (i) access, rectify, port and erase your data; (ii) confirm that we process your data; and (iii) in certain circumstances, object to and to restrict the processing of your data, or withdraw your consent when we process data you provide to us based on your consent.

You can also directly download a copy of information you've provided to Meta using the Download Your Information Tool available in the Meta Account Privacy Center. Downloading your information is a password-protected process that only you can initiate. Keep in mind that your downloaded file may contain sensitive information. We recommend that you keep it secure and take precautions when storing, sending or uploading it to any other services.
    We store data that identifies you until it is no longer necessary to provide our Services or your account is deleted, whichever comes first, unless retention of the data for a longer period is justified in order to comply with law or recordkeeping obligations, to respond to a legal request, to prevent harm or to improve our safety, integrity and security features. This is determined on a case-by-case basis that depends on things such as the nature of the data, why it is collected and processed and relevant legal, integrity or operational retention needs.
    When you delete your account, subject to the exceptions noted in this Privacy Policy, we delete your information, including your account profile and any content you have uploaded to the Platform, and you will not be able to recover this information later.
    To the extent your end users submit voice inputs to us through the Service, we process audio recordings of their voice to create text transcripts of what they say, as well as related data such as the IP address of their device (collectively, "Voice Data"). Voice Data is retained by us for up to ninety (90) days after which it is permanently deleted.
  11. How do we operate and transfer data as part of our global services?
  12. We share information globally, both internally within the Meta Companies and externally with our partners. Your information may, for example, be transferred or transmitted to, or stored and processed in countries outside of where you live for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy. These data transfers are necessary to provide the Services (as set forth in the Terms of Service) and to globally operate.
    If your information is controlled by Meta Platforms Ireland, Ltd., it will be transferred or transmitted to, or stored and processed in the United States or other countries outside where you live for the purposes as described in this Privacy Policy. We use standard contract clauses approved by the European Commission and rely on the European Commission's adequacy decisions about certain countries, as applicable, for data transfers from the EEA to the United States and other countries. No data subject to this Privacy Policy is transferred under Meta's Privacy Shield certification.
    If you are from the United Kingdom (UK), your information is controlled by Meta Platforms, Inc. For transfers to countries outside the UK, Meta Platforms, Inc. relies on approved standard contractual transfer mechanisms and relevant UK adequacy regulations, as applicable.
  13. What are our legal bases for processing data under the GDPR/UK GDPR?
  14. Under European and UK law, companies must have a legal basis to process personal data. We generally process your personal data as necessary to perform our contract with you, as described in the Wit.ai Terms of Service. The core data uses necessary to provide our contractual services are:
    • To provide, personalize and improve the Services;
    • To promote safety, integrity and security;
    • To transfer, transmit, store or process your data outside the EEA and the United Kingdom, including to within the United States and other countries; and
    • To communicate with you, for example, regarding issues related to our Services.
    We'll use the data we have to provide these services; if you choose not to provide certain data, the quality of your experience using our Services may be affected.
    The other legal bases we rely on in certain instances when processing your data are:
    • Our legitimate interests or the legitimate interests of a third party, where not outweighed by your interests or fundamental rights and freedoms. This includes where we use your information to promote safety, integrity and security on all of the Meta Company Products, to provide marketing communications to you, to improve our Services and our automatic speech recognition models, to share information with law enforcement and respond to legal requests, and to prevent and address fraud, unauthorised use of the Services, breaches and violations of our terms and policies or other harmful or illegal activity.
    • Compliance with a legal obligation. For processing data when the law requires it, including, for example, if there is a valid legal request for certain data.

  17. How will we notify you of changes to this Privacy Policy?

If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will provide notice of such changes, such as by sending you an email notification to the address you've provided and/or by providing notice on the website or Platform, unless your consent is required by applicable law. If we make any changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy.
